Wednesday, 21 May 2025 20:06 (UTC)SCSF: I am always up for a challenge, so let me see!
So... after a quick look, I have some examples:
-Sa'Kuya, from Enchanter and StarMan
-Xhosm, from Threshold (a side character who helps our protagonists learn magic)
-Anya, from Beyond the Hanging Wall (another side character who helps the protagonists... escort someone, I think?)
-Hasweb, who I do not think should count, but I do find it interesting that she is not described as beautiful when she is talked about, even though she is the daughter of StarDrifter.
Beyond that, I would submit Gwendylyr; she is described as "lovely" at one point, and I have not checked all her appearances to check if that recurs, but there does not seem to be any kind of emphasis on her beauty.
It is by no means exhaustive, of course, and I am sure I made some errors in it... but I would say I did what you asked for!
I was mostly referring to the appearance of juvenile wish fulfilment but also stuff like the use of inappropriately cutesy language like "higgeldy-piggeldy" and Gorgrael constantly falling on his ass like a cartoon character.
Oh yes, I see what you mean now; I think that will be rather grating indeed when we get to it.
Hmm, for yourself I am not sure if I could tell that? I mean, I already know, so that makes it hard to come at it knowing only your works, but that work is considerably more deliberate than Paolini's, so it is harder to infer much from it. That said, I think I would be able to tell that the person writing it is ace or adjacent to it.
