It really sucks that they're never punished for it. The last time I wrote a manipulative character, the person he was trying to manipulate caught on and told him to fuck off before ultimately forcing him to tell everyone the truth. And later, he doesn't fully trust the guy not to try it again even though they're friends now. That never happens with these jerks.
